Description
Studio portrait of 3722 Private (Pte) Herbert Edwin Cowell, 4th Battalion. Pte Cowell, of Hurlstone Park, NSW, enlisted on 25 July 1915 and embarked for overseas service with the 12th Reinforcements, 4th Battalion on board HMAT A7 Medic on 30 December 1915. After a short period in Egypt, the Battalion moved to France, where Pte Cowell was wounded in action on 17 August 1916 and evacuated to England for several months. Returning to France, Pte Cowell was killed in the Battle of Lagnicourt on 15 April 1917. He was 23 years old.
