Description

149mm howitzer with box frame trail and curved splinter shield. Cradle trunnions are at the very rear of the barrel, with large coil springs providing equilibration under the cradle at its mid point. The splinter shield is formed from two main plates, horizontally divided. The upper part is able to fold forward towards the muzzle. Two curved plates on the left side of the barrel allow the use of a pantographic telescope.

A bronze Plate rivetted onto tool box lid on trail is inscribed with "Italia Obice Da 149"; Inscribed numbers on towing eye on trail read '23005' and '1012'. 1012 is also visble on the main body of the trail. Sight mount present. The sight mount accomodates a short curved rack and pinion sight bracket, at the uppermost part of which a panoramic sight would have been fitted. Breech ring number matches breech block number. Horizontal sliding breech. Elevation wheel and traverse wheel on left side of breech. Wooden Gun layer's seat, fastened to a tubular steel support. Wooden spoked wheels, iron rimmed of the German pattern - with spokes fitted into square metal recepticals fastened onto the felloes. Gun is painted in a thin light grey wash. Rear face of breech is inscribed at the top with the Krupp logo of three intersecting circles, and 'Fried. Krupp A.G. Essen 1911' and at the bottom with 'Nr 1020 870kg m v. The top surface of the breech is inscribed with 'M963' and 'S.997' On the side of the recuperator are visble four small holes which formerly held in place a nomenclature plate.

This gun was produced by Krupp for the Italian Government prior to the First World War. It was presented to the Australian Government by the Government of Italy.
