Studio portrait of 2037 Private Charles Ferdinand Bretag, 39th Infantry Battalion of Jeparit North, Vic and an unidentified nurse holding crutches. A farmer prior to his enlistment on 5 May 1916 he embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Shropshire on 25 September 1916 and returned to Australia on 3 July 1917.
