Studio portrait of 1059 Private (Pte) Alexander Matthews, 24th Battalion from East Malvern, Victoria. A 19 year old carpenter with two years service in the Citizen Forces prior to enlisting in the AIF on 8 March 1915, he embarked for overseas service with A Company, 24th Infantry Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 10 May 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he transferred to the 5th Field Company Engineers (FCE) and went with them to Gallipoli. On returning to Egypt, he transferred to the 8th FCE and was given a new service number of 4463. While serving on the Western Front, he was promoted to Lance Corporal on 21 July 1916 and to Corporal on 4 May 1918. After returning to Australia, he was discharged on 11 April 1919.
