Collection relating to the North Russia Intervention service of 192143 Private Wilfred Charles Yeaman, 201 Machine Gun Company, North Russia Relief Force, Russia, 1919-1920.
Wallet 1 of 1 - This wallet contains a diary kept by Private Yeaman Diary during his service with the North Russia Relief Force, 1919-1920. The diary begins 23 May 1919 with Yeaman detailing his activities in the weeks leading up to the campaign. He describes military routine, guard duty, training exercises, and rest activities. He then describes the journey to Russia along the coast of Norway. His entries during the Russia campaign describe the weather, activities, tactical intentions of the 'Bolshies' or 'Bolo', 'Ruskies' and the Cossacks. Also military routine, prisoners, guard duty, movements. He travelled to Murmansk, Archangel, Obozersky, and Emsta. After the campaign, he journeys through England and France. During this period he describes his sightseeing, including climbing the Eiffel Tower.
Yeaman describes the effects of battles in the Russia campaign, including at Obozersky and Emtsa. This includes mention of Sergeant Pearse VC. Yeaman's diary also describes the arrest and execution of Russian mutineers by White Russian forces.
The wallet also includes a postcard from Wilfred Charles Yeaman to his mother, Harriett Mary Ann Yeaman. The postcard depicts his troopship, the HMT 'Czar'.
