Studio portrait of 27901 Gunner Leopold Howard Lawford, 25th Battalion from Prahran, Victoria. A 26 year old fireman with Victorian Railways prior to enlisting on 1 May 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Borda (A30) on 20 October 1916. After disembarking in England, he proceeded to France in July 1917 and transferred to the 6th Light Trench Mortar Battery. He was wounded in action on 24 April 1918 and spent the next ten weeks undergoing medical treatment and recuperation in France. After being wounded in action for the second time on 26 August 1918, he was evacuated to England for medical treatment and then he returned to Australia arriving on 2 March 1919.
