Studio portrait of 13971 Private (Pte) Roy Victor Smith, 8th Field Ambulance. An accountant from Northcote, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Smith embarked with the Australian Army Medical Corps Special Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Kanowna on 29 March 1916. Originally joining the 8th Field Ambulance, he later transferred to the 16th Field Ambulance before returning to his original unit. He returned to Australia on 10 June 1916.
