Peabody Martini Rifle : Turkish Army
Description
Peabody single shot Martini rifle. Falling block breech action with a loading lever at the rear of the trigger guard. The left side of the action is marked PEABODY AND MARTINI PATENTS MANUFACTURED BY PROVIDENCE TOOL CO PROV. R.I. USA. The right side is engraved with a Turkish inscription and a date in Arabic. It has a wooden butt, fore end held to the barrel with two steel bands and a top hand guard. Rear sight graduated in Arabic numerals. Complete with a cleaning rod.
History / Summary
The Turkish government ordered 600,000 of these rifles from America in 1874 when they were unable to purchase British Martini Henry rifles.
