Mauser Model 1896 Rifle
Description
Mauser Model 1896 bolt action rifle. The left side of the action is marked MOD. MAUSER 1896 and DEUSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONS FABRIKEN BERLIN. It has a one piece wood stock with a top handguard and a steel end cap that incorporates a bayonet lug on the underside. The left side of the stock and breech ring are stamped O.V.S. (Orange Free State) and the serial number. It has vise marks on the fore end sides. Complete with a cleaning rod.
History / Summary
This rifle was purchased by the Orange Free State in May 1897and captured during the South African War 1899 - 1900.
