MP40 Submachine Gun

The MP40 submachine gun is a blowback operated weapon that fires from an open bolt. It fires in the full automatic role only. The weapon has a blued finish.The bolt system has a telescoping return spring guide which also served as a pneumatic recoil buffer helping to reduce the rate of fire to a manageable level. The bolt handle is attached to the bolt and also serves as a safety device. The handguard is made from plastic and is located between the magazine housing and pistol grip. A folding shoulder stock results in a compact weapon when folded. A double row 32 round detachable box magazine is attached to the bottom of the receiver. A leather sling is attached to the receiver. The receiver top is stamped MP40 fxo and the serial number.

The MP40 was a simplified version of the MP38, intended to reduce the time and expense of manufacture. It introduced modern methods of stampings and sub-assemblies which could be made by small subcontractors throughout Germany. The result was a highly practical and effective weapon.
