Description
Heraklion, Crete. 1941-05-20. German paratroops of Fallschirm-Jager-Regiment I use their parachutes to descend from Junkers JU52/3M transport aircraft shot down by anti-aircraft fire. This photograph, from a cine sequence shot in the evening at about 1800 hours, shows paratroops of 6. and 7. Kompanies of the II. Battalion, still jumping from a blazing JU52 just west of the Heraklion airfield onto positions defended by the Australian 2/4th Infantry Battalion. The paratroops suffered severe casualties with only five men from this group managing to escape capture by swimming out to sea.
