General Sir Thomas Blamey
Description
Depicts Sir Thomas Blamey, who was a friend of the donor's grandfather, Jack Alston Wallace. Hence the inscription on the front "Yes! Jack what can I do to help?' Harold Herbert was also friends with Blamey - his friendship with the General led to his appointment as Official War Artist in 1941. Blamey served in the First World War, and was an enthusiastic early adopter of technology - he introduced the periscope rifle and mustard gas into the arsenal of the AIF troops. He was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1939, and was involved in many key campaigns, fighting against a variety of Axis powers, from the Vichy French in Syria to the Japanese in the Pacific region.
