(Harold Herbert with portrait of Sir Thomas Blamey)
Depicts the artist, Harold Herbert (made recognisable as such by the drawing and painting implements stuck in his hat) looking at a portrait he has drawn of Sir Thomas Blamey. The General was a friend of the donor's grandfather, Jack Alston Wallace. Harold Herbert was also friends with Blamey - his friendship with the General led to his appointment as Official War Artist in 1941. Blamey served in the First World War, and was an enthusiastic early adopter of technology - he introduced the periscope rifle and mustard gas into the arsenal of the AIF troops. He was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1939, and was involved in many key campaigns, fighting against a variety of Axis powers, from the Vichy French in Syria to the Japanese in the Pacific region.
