Description
Pattern 1853 Rifle, 3rd Model. Lock marked Crown over VR and 1859 over Enfield. Butt marked with the Enfield factory roundel and stamped Arrow over GS. Opposite side THEATRE ROYAL MELBOURNE. Tang stamped A.322. Trigger Guard stamped N.S.W. The barrel is held into the stock by three split bands that are clamped by screws. It is complete and has possibly an original ramrod. It has been well used and the stock is worn.
History / Summary
The markings on this weapon indicate that it was issued to the New South Wales Military Forces and subsequently sold to the Theatre Royal Melbourne as a stage prop.
