Downes, Harry Wraith (Lieutenant, b.1918 - d.1943)
Description
Part of diary (and transcript) kept by Lt Downes while a prisoner of the Japanese working on the Burma-Thailand railway. Records work, spirit of prisoners, treatment by Japanese, disease and illness, food, deaths, movement to numerous camps. Lt Downes died in July 1943, the diary being returned to Australia by his former batman.
