Description

10.5 cm submarine deck-mounted gun. It has an horizontal sliding breech block, with two recoil cylinders above the breech block. Cradle is mounted on a conical pedestal mount, bolted to the submarine deck. The gun is missing the layer's seat attachment support on left side of gun. Foot step on left hand side bent towards floor. The sight and elevation apparatus on left side of gun has snapped off at its highest point. The rear of breech is inscribed 'Rheinische Metallwaren und Maschinen Fabrik ?EM Ehrhardt Nr 8'. A similar inscription is apparanet on a small circular plate on the left side of the breech. Gun has been painted post-war in a light grey gloss enamel.

History / Summary

The 105mm Erhardt manufactured gun was a standard German deck-mounted submarine gun of the First World War. The gun was carefully designed to take into account the requirements of submarine operations and therefore was streamlined in design, with many items made from brass to resist corrosion.
