Forage cap : Australian Women's Legion
Dark brown, lightweight wool twill forage cap lined with dark brown corded silk. Attached to the front, by a brooch pin, is a round enamelled bronze badge made made by Stokes, Melbourne. The badge shows a red map of Australia on a white ground with the lettering 'A.W.L SERVICE'. Around the upper rim of the badge is a red enamelled 'horseshoe' bearing the words 'AUSTRALIAN WOMEN'S LEGION'.
Made in 1946 for the Australian War Memorial by Myers Ltd, in Melbourne, from the original patterns held by that firm. The Memorial had been unable to obtain an original uniform to represent the Australian Women's Legion (AWL) contribution to the war effort during the Second World War. The AWL was a patriotic voluntary organisation committed to raising funds for the war effort and to giving practical support to military personnel within Australia.
