Description
An M125A1 Mortar Carrier, callsign 83Alpha, still burning after it was recovered from in front of an enemy defended position in the Long Hais. During the earlier attack, as part of Operation HAMMERSLEY, the vehicle was hit by three RPGs and soon after set on fire by a satchel charge. While the infantry passengers were able to be rescued, both the crew commander, Lance Corporal Barry Whiston and driver, Trooper Hugh Carlyle were killed in action. Those involved in rescuing the wounded infantry, Corporal Ron Macey (3 Cav) and Lance Corporal Barry Coe (8RAR), were each awarded the Military Medal (MM) for their bravery.
