Bougainville. August 1945. The Japanese envoy Captain Takenanka, who was deputed by Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) M. Kanda, Commander of the Imperial Japanese 17th Army Group, to approach the Australian Corps Commander, adopted a truculent attitude on being escorted aboard HMAS Lithgow. Before being conduced to Lt Gen S. G. Savige's headquarters he was searched to make sure that he was not carrying grenades or concealed arms.
