Lee-Enfield .22 RF Pattern 1914 Short Rifle
Lee-Enfield .22 RF Pattern 1914 No I Short Rifle. Receiver marked right side VR BSA&MCo 1897 LE I A.G.PARKER & Co Ltd, BIRMINGHAM .22 PATT '14 No I and left side ENFIELD 1905 Sht LE ConD II. Butt marked D 30 and the brass disc stamped 5.09 4R.M.F. 463. This rifle has the configuration of the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk II but has the magazine spring and cutout removed. The .303 inch barrel has been bored out and a .22 calibre tube fitted inside the barrel. The bolt head is modified to take an off set firing pin, which is missing.
This rifle was originally manufactured as a Lee-Enfield Mk I and converted to a Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk II. It was again converted in 1914 to a .22 calibre training rifle. The butt disc indicates that it was issued to the Fourth Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers in May 1909 and D 30 means that it was susequently issued to Australian Military Forces.
