Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Ronald Shafto Adair and 2nd Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Sydney William Robinson, both of No 1 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (AFC). Lt Adair was a 22 year old engineer from Maryborough, Queensland when he enlisted on 21 February 1916 as a private with the service number 134. He embarked for overseas service with No 1 Squadron AFC, from Melbourne, on 16 March 1916 aboard HMAT Orsova (A67) and served in the Middle East with No 17 and No 57 Squadrons Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and with No 1 Squadron AFC. He was appointed a flying officer (pilot) [2nd Lt] on 5 December 1917, qualified to wear wings on 15 February 1918 and promoted to lieutenant on 5 March 1918. Lt Adair arrived back in Australia on 14 March 1919.
2nd Lt Robinson was a 23 year old horse buyer from Toowoomba, Queensland when he enlisted on 19 August 1914 as a private with the service number 379. He embarked for overseas service with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment from Brisbane on 24 September 1914 aboard HMAT Star of England (A15) and served at Gallipoli and in the Middle East with the Light Horse and the Camel Corps. After being promoted to Sergeant, he was detached to the School of Aeronautics, AFC and graduated as a flying officer (pilot) on 5 December 1917. He served with No 58 and No 57 Squadrons and qualified to wear wings on 15 February 1918. 2nd Lt Robinson arrived back in Australia o 30 January 1919.
