Description
Thesis "The History of the Defence Forces of the Port Phillip District and Colony of Victoria 1836-1900". Examines the impact of European politics and events on the raising of Victorian and Australian defence forces. Looks at the development of colonial naval strength especially Victoria's contributions to British wars and home defence. The voluntary nature of Australian defence forces is also discussed. Chapters include the imperial forces in Victoria, the creation of a navy, self defence on land the Volunteer Force and Fixed Defences, the expansion of the navy and the reorganised army, the Cadet Corps, the Victorian Expeditionary Forces to South Africa and towards a federal force.
