Land Army girls on cotton
Description
Depicts several Australian Women's Land Army members in the field picking cotton by hand. As a member of the Australian Women's Land Army (AWLA), Grace Taylor was stationed at Biloela, Queensland, where the service was engaged in cotton picking. Taylor depicts an idyllic scene that belies the fact that the work was physically demanding, and that the women worked long hours and were paid according to their cotton yield. Only one woman looks up from her work, the others are stooped over - committed, determined. An artist in civilian life, Taylor painted cartoons on the hut walls where the women slept.
