Description

Group portrait of members in training camp, probably of the 30th Infantry Brigade. Men identified in this group are, left to right, back row: Jim Spalding; Gus Bird; Len Starkey; Oscar Grace; Ron Henderson; Jack Smith (V250062 Corporal John Bying Smith). Second row: Arthur “Plugger” Knuckey (probably VX104995 (V25388) Arthur Roy Knuckey); unidentified; Jack M Mahon, Des “Squeaker” Duggan. Front row: Col Whitelock (probably VX123342 (V250066) Colin John Whitelock). Jack Smith was attached to the 30th Brigade in December 1941 and then transferred to the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU). He was promoted to Corporal in January 1943. His last posting was to Murchison Prisoner of War Camp before his discharge in 1946.
