Description
One of a series of fourteen lithographs from the published print portfolio, 'Europa' commissioned in 1922 by the publishing house, Georg Muller Verlad.This image contains Scharf's response to the industrialisation of the period in a grim horrific portrayal of its negative impacts of pollution and exploitation. The image shows an endless expanse of figures bend low over chimneys billowing black ominous smoke. Towering figures in top hats leer threateningly over the crowd of workers ensuring continuation of the slavish work.
