Boer War Scrapbook
Collection relating to the service of Australian Contingents in the Boer War. The collection consists of a large red leather-bound scrapbook containing newspaper articles and photographs of Boer War Soldiers, including portraits and group portraits. Articles and newspaper clippings are dated between 1899 and 1900.
Subjects include Boer War servicemen, ranging from the New South Wales Lancers; Victorian Bushmen's Corps; New Canadian and Australasian Division; the Durham Light Infantry; Wellington Troopers of the New Zealand contingent; the Tasmanian Contingent; the Queensland 4th Contingent and there are (named) group portraits of all Squadrons of the Imperial Bushmen of New South Wales: A Squadron First Section, A Squadron Second Section, B Squadron First Section, B Squadron Second Section, C Squadron First Section, C Squadron Second Section, D Squadron, E Squadron, F Squadron First Section and F Squadron Second Section.
There are also individual newspaper portraits including officers, chaplains, child mascots, nurses, veterinary-surgeons and Boer officers. The scrapbook contains maps, accounts of battles, graphic illustrations of bursting shells, destroyed guns and bridges, forts and fighting. There are many interesting anecdotal photographs and articles such as Queen Victoria's chocolate tin gift to the troops and an image of the diving corps on board HMS Powerful.
