Armistice Day
Description
Hanrahan depicts four women with their first names above the images from l-r: Alice, Molly, Dawn, Mary. Behind them on the wall are the images of six men l-r: Bob, Willy, Ron, Charlie, Arthur, David. The men are veterans of the First World War (possibly the husbands or lovers of the women). Also etched in the plate is the message 'happy new year 1924 [sic]'. The print commemorates the annual observance of Armistice Day, when an armistice between the Allies and Germany was signed at 11 am on 11 November 1918, effectively bringing the First World War to an end. Armistice Day is also known as Remembrance Day.
