On 23 September 1914, HMAS Parramatta captured the German steamer "Meklong", which was hidden in a creek on Duke of York Island, part of German New Guinea. The Meklong manned by soldiers and the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF), tying up to the wharf.
