Bougainville. August 1945. The corvette, HMAS Lithgow left Torokina on 19 August 1945 for a rendezvous near the Buin area to pick up an envoy from the Japanese Commander of the Imperial Japanese 17th Army Group, Lieutenant General M. Kanda at 8.00 am on 20 August 1945. A barge flying the white surrender flag approached and was escorted by Fairmiles to the corvette.
