Thesis "The Arming of Australia : the politics and administration of Australia's self containment strategy for munitions supply 1901 to 1945". Examines the application of the policy and whether it succeeded in securing munitions supply in Australia during a major conflict. Concludes that economic difficulties from 1920 to 1939 and distrust of Britain as a reliable source of munitions, led Australian governments to develop the Munitions Supply Board. Chapters cover the emergence of the strategy, the role of the board within defence policy, in relation to secondary industry and in organising industry 1921 to 1939, the evolution of war time production strategy 1937 to 1940 and the new munitions programmes, relations with the armed services 1940 to 1945 and the cost and effectiveness of self containment.
