This Lancaster (W4983) was later shot down on the night of 12 June 1943 by German night fighter pilot Major Werner Streib flying a He-219 Uhu (Owl) night fighter. It was one of five confirmed aircraft he shot down that evening (11/12 June 1943). All 8 occupants of the Lancaster were killed in the crash at Rosenthal, Wassenberg in Germany. Streib was an acclaimed night fighter ace with 67 night-time and one daylight confirmed aircraft shot down during the Second World War. He survived the war and later served with the West German Air Force. He died in Munich on 15 June 1986 at the age of 75.
