Portrait taken at RAAF Headquarters of 400788 Pilot Officer Wilbur James Dowling, of Echuca, Vic, second pilot of the Sunderland aircraft "N for Nan" of No. 461 squadron RAAF which was attacked by eight Junkers Ju 88 aircraft in the Bay of Biscay on 2 June 1943. Dowling was killed whilst on a later operation over the Bay of Biscay on 13 August 1943.
