Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX60128 Gunner Leslie James Lyons, 17 Anti Tank Battery, Rabaul, prisoner of war, 1942-1945.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Comprises an original letter written by Lyons to his mother after being taken prisoner by the Japanese at Rabaul, assuring her that he is safe and well, and one original telegram dated 20 October 1945 sent from Army Records to Arthur James Lyons, father of Leslie, informing him that Lyons previously reported as missing is now officially presumed dead.
History / Summary
Lyons died when the Montevideo Maru was sunk after being torpedoed off the coast of the Philippines on 1 July 1942. The telegram was added to this collection in September 2012.
