Within an instant of emptying an M60 machine gun Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Len Ellcombe of Heidelberg, Vic, grabs his M16 rifle and, one-handed, returns the fire of a Viet Cong (VC) group who are attempting to ambush the armoured personnel carriers (APCs). L Cpl Ellcombe is a member of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) Defence and Employment Platoon, part of which was attached to the APCs of B Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, for a sweep of the area in North-Eastern Phuoc Tuy province. The Australians had previously killed eleven enemy in a night ambush, and in this action accounted for five more. Two rocket launchers, five rockets, and a new Communist Chinese pistol were captured. Also identified (left) is 312604 Pte Brian 'Jock' Rennie. Pte Rennie died of wounds received in South Vietnam on 7 September 1969.
