Description
The Commanding Officer, Acting Commander H S Gunn, escorts His Excellency General Sir John Northcott, the Governor of NEW South Wales, on an inspection of the men's living quarters at a base at Manus Island. Work on an RAN base here commenced in August 1948. It was commissioned as HMAS Seeadler on 1 January 1950 and recommissioned as HMAS Tarangau on 1 April 1950. The name was transferred from the decommissioned RAN Base at Dreger Harbour, New Guinea.(Naval Historical Collection)
