Left to right: 405246 Flying Officer (later Flight Lieutenant [Fl Lt]) John Albert Kirby DFM, 460 Squadron RAAF, of Murwillumbah, NSW; Flight Lieutenant R.M. Newitt DFC, Vancouver, Canada, RCAF; 405173 FO Anthony Thomas Covacevich DFC, 8 Squadron RAF, of Innisfail, Qld, at an investiture at Buckingham Palace. FL Lt Kirby was killed in a training accident with 460 Squadron when his aircraft crashed near Witchford, Cambridge, UK on 30 April 1944. He is buried in the Cambridge City Cemetery.
