LUNGGA, GUADALCANAL, SOLOMON ISLANDS, 1943-10. SERGEANT (SGT) YAUWIKA, A MEMBER OF THE NATIVE CONSTABULARY, AT THE HEADQUARTERS CAMP OF THE DEPUTY SUPERVISING INTELLIGENCE OFFICER (DSIO), NAVAL INTELLIGENCE DIVISION, RAN, AFTER THE DSIO HAD PRESENTED HIM WITH THE LOYAL SERVICES MEDAL. THE MEDAL IS HANGING FROM A NECKLACE HE IS WEARING AROUND HIS NECK. SGT YAUWIKA, A CHIEF FROM THE SEPIK RIVER DISTRICT OF NEW GUINEA, GAVE VALUABLE ASSISTANCE TO COASTWATCHERS OPERATING IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS. HE WAS LATER WOUNDED BY A GRENADE AND LOST THE SIGHT OF ONE EYE.
