Description
Wireless or radio set concealed inside a water bottle that NX34734 Captain Reginald W. J. (`Roaring Reggie') Newton carried from 1942 to August 1945, when he was a prisoner of war (POW) of the Japanese. Captain Newton was a member of the 2/19th Battalion, AIF, which was captured at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. He became the Commanding Officer of U Battalion, D Force, which worked on the Burma-Thailand railway, and was camp commander of various POW camps in Malaya, on the Burma-Thailand railway and in Japan. The wireless was probably manufactured in Changi POW Camp. It was 4 inches high, 4 inches wide and 1.25 inches deep. (Donor W. Mariner)
