Description

Marble slabs, which were designed to cover the graves of three unknown soldiers from Britain, Australia and New Zealand, at the base of the memorial to honour those who died in Greece during World War 2. The request to move three bodies of unknown soldiers from Phaleron Cemetery in Athens in 1950 was denied by the Imperial War Graves Commission. Instead they suggested erecting a cenotaph, which means ‘empty grave’. The Memorial was unveiled on 25 April 1952 by King Paul of Hellenes in the presence of the Australian High Commissioner in London, Sir Thomas White.
