Description
A Douglas Dakota C47 aircraft of the United States Air Force taking off from the airstrip at Bena Bena in the Mount Hagen area. The aircraft has just brought in several members of M Special Unit, Services Reconnaissance Department, Allied Intelligence Bureau, who were to make their way as members of Locust and Whiting parties overland to the north coast of New Guinea. The Dakota is evacuating from the area several American missionaries who were in danger of death or capture at the hands of Japanese forces. The man at left in the pith helmet is 'Lofty' Anderson, New Guinea volunteer rifles (NGVR).
