Description

Large black album relating to SX13860 Lieutenant Edwin Harry Medlin, 2/1 Fortress Company. Born on 4 January 1920, Medlin enlisted in the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) in February 1938 and received his commission in 1939. He was second in command of 38 Fortress Company RAE between 1939-1941 and second in command 2/1 Fortress Company RAE from 1941. 2/1 Fortress Company became attached to Sparrow Force in late 1941 and Medlin embarked for overseas service to Timor with this unit on 7 December. Detached to Combined Defence Headquarters, Sparrow Force on 14 January 1942, Medlin was taken prisoner of war on 23 February. He was recovered from Batavia on 23 September 1945 and returned to Australia for discharge on 25 February 1946.

Photographs in the album include various scenes, local people, Australian servicemen, camps and activities at Fort Largs, South Australia; Darwin and throughout the Northern Territory; as well as arrival in Timor and throughout his time as a prisoner of war. There are annotations throughout.

These photographs also relate to Medlin’s brother, SX15009 Sergeant Arthur Jack Medlin, 2/1st Fortress Company.
