Military Cross: Captain Robert Jonathan Wallis, 8th Battalion, AIF
Military Cross (Geo V). Unnamed as issued.
Robert Jonathan Wallis enlisted in the First AIF on 17 August 1914. Posted as sergeant to the 8th Battalion, he was wounded on the opening day at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, but returned to his unit 5 days later. The following month he was made second lieutenant, and by war’s end had attained the rank of major. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1917. The recommendation for the award reads:
"As adjutant of the Battalion, this officer has proved himself highly competent and efficient, showing initiative and courage at all times. After the heavy fighting on the SOMME in which the Battalion took part and lost many officers and men, the work of reorganisation fell mostly on this officer, and he carried out his duties in a highly efficient manner. His work at all times has been consistently good, and his judgement has always been excellent. With the exception of 10 weeks absence through illness, he has served continuously since August 1914. His services are worthy of recognition."
Wallis returned to Australia in May 1919, and his appointment was terminated in December. During the interwar period he served as an officer with the 37th and 39th CMF Battalions. Wallis served again during the Second World War with the 6th and 8th Battalions domestically, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel before being discharged on 23 June 1944.
