Portrait of 396 Leslie Keith Gordon Peterson, 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment
Studio portrait of 396 Trooper Leslie Keith Gordon Peterson, 13th Australian Light Horse Regiment. A farmer from Cressy, Victoria, Leslie Peterson enlisted on 5 February 1915. He was taken on strength with the 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment in France on 7 July 1916. Trooper Peterson was killed in action aged 24, on 27 September 1917 in Belgium. His older brother, 1724 Cpl James Roy Peterson was killed in action at Bullecourt on 3 May 1917. A younger brother, 3454 Pte Thomas Eric Peterson, 50th Battalion, died of wounds at Dernancourt, aged 20 on 5 April 1918. Another brother, 2213 Archibald Moyes Peterson, 27th Battalion survived the war. As their father was also deceased, the war medals of Tpr Peterson and his brothers were delivered to his mother, Mrs May Peterson in South Australia as their nearest nest of kin.
