Collection relating to the service of 1966 John O'Connor
Group portrait of 3rd Reinforcements 49th Battalion taken in Rollestone Camp, Salisbury. Private 1966 John (Jack) O’Connor is located third row down, seventh from the left. He has drawn on the back the shape and colours of his colour patches (he was transferred from the 49th to the 41st Battalion after a period of training in England).
Text on back reads “Our coulors [colours] were light blue & black standing. Black in front and now since we’ve transferred to the 41st the colours are ege shape.
This is the 3/49th Batt [Battalion] taken in Rollestone Camp, Salisbury Pls [Plains] before being transferred to the 41st & 42nd Battn [Battalion] Lark Hill.
I am wearing a cap in the 3 line from the top. Will Green is not in this photo.
The two men on either end are British Imperial Instructors. The Tomy [Tommy] standing on the right side with his hands behind his back is the Champion Light Weight Restler [Wrestler] of the World. He was instructing us in bouyonet [bayonet] exercises.
Jack to Mum.”
