Helmet : Egyptian Army
Egyptian Army steel helmet, the design of which is based on the Russian Model 1940. The helmet shell has extensive damage and an overall rusted surface finish, although areas of the original olive green paint remain on the crown. There is no liner, but parts of the steel liner support and the three rivets to retain it are still in place. The helmet has three large entry/exit holes in the crown, caused by bullets or shrapnel, and a number of smaller holes on the lower right hand side.
The helmet was collected from an Arab-Israeli battlefield in 1985 by Major Michael Prain, and was presumably worn by an Egyptian soldier in the Yom Kippur War of October 1973. Prain, of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, was serving as a military observer with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), attached to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) with Observer Group Golan (OGG).
