Description
Large brown album containing 102 photographs taken or collected by 132453 Leading Aircraftman Leonard George Herford while serving in 23 Squadron RAAF. Herford, of Sydney, New South Wales, enlisted on 30 March 1943 and served with the Photographic Division in Australia and the Pacific region. Most photographs were taken and developed by Herford and have accompanying captions.
Photographs include images of Balikpapan, including general scenes and the destruction of the harbour, oil refineries, vehicles and railway; as well as images of 23 Squadron camp, including the facilities and mess. There are also several aerial photographs of bombing Japanese aircraft (24 October 1943), phosphorous bombs over Rabaul (2 November 1943), and bombing of various Japanese vessels at sea.
