Description
Large brown album containing 65 photographs taken or collected by 132453 Leading Aircraftman Leonard George Herford while serving in 23 Squadron RAAF. Herford, of Sydney, New South Wales, enlisted on 30 March 1943 and served with the Photographic Division in Australia and the Pacific region. Most photographs were taken and developed by Herford and have accompanying captions.
Photographs from Balikpapan include 23 Squadron landing and aircraft; convoy of ships; local people; informal group portraits of the photographic section; local insects and animals. Images from Morotai include general scenes of the camp, aircraft and airstrip, Australian personnel and local people as well as Japanese prisoners of war. There are also several images aboard USS Cleveland Forbes and aerial photographs of aircraft and the destruction of Japanese shipping.
