Collection relating to 1293 Staff Sergeant John (Jack) Rook, 38th Battalion
Description
Members of the AIF, all unidentified and with hats off, following the funeral and burial of 2325 Sergeant Lionel Pretorius Holloway, 19th Battalion, attached AIF Headquarters, who died of illness on 15 January 1919. The men standing around the grave are likely the fellow non-commissioned officers who worked with Sergeant Holloway. The service was conducted by Captain Chaplain Donald Leacroft Freer, Chaplain attached to AIF Headquarters. Chaplain Freer, ex 38th Battalion chaplain, was wounded in the face by a shell while conveying wounded to hospital and lost an eye.
