Collection relating to the Second World War service of 436012 Flight Lieutenant John Trench Sykes, 40 Bomber Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, Australia, United Kingdom and Middle East, 1943-1945.
Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one flying log book of Flight Lieutenant Sykes, with entries between 7 May 1943 and 3 June 1945. The entries record detail such as dates and times of flights, types and numbers of aircraft, crewmembers, and purposes of flights. Some of these purposes include general flying training, advanced flying training, cross country flights, tests, operational training, and aircraft conversion. Additionally, this log book contains course notes and certificates for assessments and courses completed.
Flight Lieutenant Sykes enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 28 October 1942. He trained as a pilot in South Australia, Victoria, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East, and learned to fly a variety of aircraft, including Airspeed Oxfords, Vickers Wellingtons, and Liberators. Flight Lieutenant Sykes went on to serve with 40 Bomber Squadron late in the war. He was discharged on 3 January 1946.
