The records in this series are registers of Australian military personnel who were eligible for certain honours or awards relating to service in the Malayan Emergency or Indonesian Confrontation in Borneo.

They were created after Australian involvement in both conflicts had finished c.1958-1970

There are two odd files that are not arranged in the same way. One is file created by Defence in 2017 to hold various loose documents relating to casualties from both conflicts. The other is a file of computer printouts relating to the issue of the General Service Medal 1962 with Clasp for the Malay Peninsula.

The records are no longer used by Defence as the awards they relate to have all been accounted for.

Using the series

The registers comprise a series of individual pages, with one page per service member. Each page includes the person’s name, Army No., Unit, Dates of embarkation and disembarkation, and a stamp filled with the dates the relevant medal was posted.

System of arrangement and control

The control structure has been arbitrarily added as only minimal control existed on these records. The records have imposed control symbols as it was decided in consultation with the NAA that this was the best way to handle this small series.

The system simply uses an abbreviated version of the name of each roll and the range of the first letters of the alphabet of the surnames it contains. There is one exception which is a file that has a three part number system created by Defence for the transfer.
